The sweet Roger Corman Blu-Ray bundle YOU CAN have!

Shout! Factory recently released some Roger Corman classics on Blu-Ray, each release proving to be a solid Blu-Ray title, better than the most of the dreck showing up on the format these days. It's a relief that someone out there is giving these titles the appropriate treatment they deserve.

These Blu-Rays are now being made available as one set directly from Shout! Factory, who are making the set available at 50% the regular price plus free shipping! You really can't ask for a better deal than that. The set includes the following:

  • Star Crash
  • Death Race 2000
  • Rock n' Roll High School
  • Humanoids from the Deep
  • Forbidden World
  • Galaxy of Terror
  • Piranha

No word on how long this deal will be made available, so you better not wait, especially if you are looking for a good gift idea for the upcoming holiday season. The set can be purchased at the Shout! Factory store.

The sweet b-movie collection YOU can't have!

The good thing about this set is it contains some of the best b-movies ever made, making it a perfect gift for anyone from aficionados to amateurs. The bad thing is its not available for purchase here.

The B-Movie DVD Collection from Boulevard Entertainment is only available for purchase in the UK, so you can only get it through eBay or overseas retailers, if you can find it, that is. But if you can get your hands on it, you'll have yourself a fantastic set containing twelve solid 'b' titles:

* Creature
* Crocodile
* Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
* Hell Comes to Frogtown
* Night of the Living Dead (Colourised)
* Octopus
* Rats
* Return of the Killer Tomatoes
* Return to Horror High
* Slugs
* Spiders
* The Stuff

Hopefully we'll see this set, or something similar, on this side of the ocean shortly. Until then, good luck finding a copy.

B.O.B. XMAS BUYER'S GUIDE 2009

Another year, another lovely mucky Christmas; time for another stupid buyer's guide! Here's a quick list for 2009:

Night of the Creeps
Night of the Creeps have finally made their way to DVD. Many fans have been clamoring for this title for a long time now, so this should be on the top of your list.

Howard the Duck
Also finally making its way to DVD is Howard the Duck. For some reason, George Lucas decided not to revisit this film with some additional scenes and new special effects.

Hardware (2-Disc Limited Edition)
Less of a b-movie and more of a cool little flick, Hardware is another long sought out title that finally made its way to DVD. This hidden gem will leave you pleasantly surprised.

Portable Grindhouse: The Lost Art of the VHS Box, Vol. 1 (v. 1)
Finally, the coolest thing to get this year is Portable Grindhouse, a book about some of the greatest VHS art in history. Any b-movie lover knows that box art is how these films get discovered, so this should be high atop your list of purchases for 2009!

Have a mucky Christmas and bring on the new year!

Night of the Creeps coming to DVD! We need another petition.

That's right boys and girls, the other Fred Dekker masterpiece Night of the Creeps is finally coming to DVD. After a successful campaign to get The Monster Squad on DVD, fans put forth another campaign to get Night of the Creeps released as well. It always seemed less likely to be released, which is why this recent announcement came as a very pleasant surprise!

The news came from Red Shirt Pictures, the company behind many fantastic DVD releases, including Hellraiser, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Future-Kill and, of course, The Monster Squad. Complete details have not been released yet, but expect the DVD to be released in October 2009 via Sony, and should contain the director's cut with the original ending, as well as commentaries, interview, and a buttload of other great extras!

So we've had two successful campaigns to get some great b-movies onto DVD; well done lads! But don't stop there, let's keep it going! Pick one title you want to see on DVD, shoot back in the comments, and we'll see which title gets the next push for a DVD release!

My vote is for Tammy and the T-Rex!! Make your pick below...

B.O.B. XMAS BUYER'S GUIDE 2008

Christmas is coming fast, and I bet you haven't found a gift for that special someone yet. Don't fret, because Bottom of the Barrel is here to help. And we're gonna make it easy for you this year, for there is only one thing you should be getting this year:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition (First Spaceship on Venus / Laserblast / Werewolf / Future War)
The new 20th Anniversary DVD set of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was released only a couple of months ago, and is really the only set that should be on your radar this year. It comes with with the four most requested episodes, an oral history of MST3K, a comic-con reunion, lobby cards, and best of all a Crow T. Robot figurine! This is a limited edition set that may sell out soon so get it while you can.

Horrified B-Movie Victims Playset
Looking for something else? Here's your stocking stuffer: the Horrified B-Movie Victims action figurine set. A set of minature figures of people running for their dear lives, you provide whatever horror it is they are running from: Godzilla, a teddy bear, a Transformer, a picture of your mother, whatever your sick heart desires. It's a fun, useless gift idea for the b-movie lover in your family.

Enjoy your nog!

B.O.B. XMAS BUYER’S GUIDE 2007

‘Tis the season to be wicked. Contrary to some beliefs, Christmas is not just about family and caroling and turkey dinners and all that crap; It’s about presents! This is the season where you need to stand up and tell everyone what it is you want for Christmas, and it you’re smart your list will comprise of things you are too cheap to pay for. That’s right, Christmas is a time where you exploit the ones you love into buying you something you want.

This is also the time to expand you b-movie collection, and I’m here to help. With Christmas only a few weeks away, you’re probably thinking about what b-movies to add to your wish list. Or maybe you’re trying to find the perfect gift for the b-movie lover in your family. With so many to choose from it’s not easy to narrow it down, but for this year I have some picks that should make it easier, and it even comes as a theme: the box set. There are a lot of kick-ass b-movie box sets that have been released over the past year that would make excellent gifts. The best thing about most of these sets, and about most b-movie box sets in general, is that they are rather inexpensive, and you get a ton of titles in one set. Sure, the quality may be a little low, but if you’re expecting quality in any of these titles then you’re an idiot.

Take my advice for this year: the box set is the way to go this y if you are a b-movie enthusiast. Here are my picks for the best b-movie box sets to buy this Christmas:

The Grindhouse Experience: Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Two volumes for far have been released, with 20 titles in each set. They may not necessarily be genuine grindhouse flicks, but there are quite a few gems in these sets, including Tortured Angels, Return of the Tiger, Go Kill and Come Back, Demon Witch Child, Renegade, Mr. Deathman, Phenomenal, Carthage in Flames, and many more exploitation titles.

Starlite Drive-In Collection
Eight classic drive-in flicks in one set, some of the wackiest titles you’ll ever come across, including The Pom Pom Girls, The Devil’s Hand, and Madmen of Mandoras, which features it’s alternate cut, a Bottom of the Barrel favourite, called They Saved Hitler’s Brain.

The Godzilla Collection
Our favourite giant pissed-off lizard is back in an all new set featuring it’s best films; Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla Raids Again, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro Monster, Terror of Mechagodzilla, and All Monsters Attack, plus a whole heap of special features.

The Roger Corman Collection
This man deserves to be a subject in a film course. The legendary b-movie producer/director is getting the treatment he so badly deserves with the release of this set, which includes A Bucket of Blood, X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes, Premature Buriail, Bloody Mama, and The Wild Angels. A must have for any b-movie enthusiast!

Weird Cinema: 15 Freaky Flicks
A collection of truly bizarre films in an affordable set. Titles included are more familiar flicks like Glen or Glenda, Terror of Tiny Town and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, as well as lesser known flicks like Wild Guitar, Night Tide, Bill & Coo, Hitler: Dead or Alive, and Child Bride.

All of these sets are perfect additions to any b-movie collection and will all be available just in time for Christmas. You can buy all of these sets at our Video Rack here or by clicking the cover art above. Happy shopping!

DVDs and Boobies - together at last!

In case you missed it, our favourite big-breasted b-movie icon Elvira has put her name behind a series of DVD releases called ‘Elvira’s Movie Macabre’, based on the TV show she once hosted, that have now been released. Some of the titles included in this series are Maneater Of Hydra, The House That Screamed, Monstroid, They Came From Beyond Space, Legacy Of Blood, The Werewolf Of Washington, and many more. You can buy the films individually or as double feature 2-packs, and you can find a few samples of the cover art for the releases below. Elvira certainly knows her b-movies, which is why we at Bottom of the Barrel are madly in love with her! Expect more releases from the queen of B in the coming months, but in the meantime click the link below to purchase the DVDs out now:

The Monster Squad is coming!

Last year I wrote a bit on how there were no plans to release The Monster Squad to DVD because the studio that owned it felt it didn’t have a large audience to constitute a release. We also gave to you the address to said studio so you can write to them to tell them what fucking morons they are for not releasing such a kick ass film. Well it looks like enough of you have done that, because it was recently announced that The Monster Squad is finally coming to DVD as a special edition! The studio did read those letters and opted to release the rights to Lionsgate, who will then be releasing it this year, most likely in the fall. How awesome is that?!? On behalf of all b-movie nuts, thank you for taking the time to write in bitching. To read more about the release, click the link below:

http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=3742

Well done freaks! But it’s not quite over yet. See Fred Dekker was the madman behind The Monster Squad, but he also made another equally awesome but unfortunately forgotten b-flick Night of the Creeps, and although The Monster Squad is finally getting a release, nothing has been planned for Creeps at the moment. Night of the Creeps is basically a forgotten film, basically swept under the carpet by The Monster Squad. You can’t really blame fans of The Monster Squad for forgetting Creeps; The Monster Squad is a great film that stood the test of time. But now it’s time to pull Night of the Creeps out from the vault for the whole world to enjoy! It is a fantastic b-movie that deserves respect. Fans of all b-movies, and especially The Monster Squad, would be nuts not to include this film in their collection.

So, I repeat:

If you want a NIGHT OF THE CREEPS DVD write to:

Mr. Michael Lynton
Mr. Bob Osher
Sony Pictures Entertainment
10202 West Washingtopn Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232

Now for some other upcoming b-releases you’ll get a kick out of:

Cult Camp Classics, a series of b-movie box sets from Warner, will be released on June 26, 2007, and includes the following films:
Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1: Sci-Fi Thrillers (Queen of Outer Space, Giant Behemoth, Attack of the 50-Foot Woman)
Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 2: Women in Peril (The Big Cube, Trog, Caged)
Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 3: Terrorized Travelers (Zero Hour, Skyjacked, Hot Rods To Hell)
Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 4: Historical Epics (Land of the Pharaohs, Colossus of Rhodes, The Prodigal)

The little-seen Canadian gem Graveyard Alive: A Zombie Nurse in Love will be released May 8, 2007 from BFS Entertainment.

A new special edition of Ichi the Killer, which will come in a very cool Collector’s Edition ‘Blood Bag’, will hit stores May 29, 2007 from Lionsgate.

They Came From The Grave, a five-film box set featuring some truly bad zombie flicks, will be released June 12, 2007 from Tempe Video. The set includes My Dead Girlfriend, Carnage For The Destroyer, Dead & Rotting, Filthy McNasty, and Mulva: Zombie Ass Kicker!

Finally, the gore-soaked Evil Aliens, a crazy monster film from director Jake West, will arrive October 2, 2007 from Image Entertainment.

The Monster Squad on DVD?!? Not quite yet...

Now before you get excited, I'm not reporting on an announcement of The Monster Squad on DVD. As of right now there are no plans... but there is hope. At a recent anniversary screening in Texas, director Fred Dekker responded to fan questions about a potential Monster Squad DVD, as well as a potential DVD for his other equally awesome film Night of the Creeps. He said that the studio that owns the rights to the films feels there is not enough fan support and have chosen at the moment not to release them. Now you may be one of those people that wrote an email or signed an online petition to request the release of these films; it turns out that doesn't work. Why? Because an email is so easy to delete. An online petition is so easy to ignore. They are means which are not always taken seriously, as they are impersonal means.

So how does one request The Monster Squad on DVD? Strangely enough, yet not surprisingly, it's the old fashioned way: write a letter. You see, Fred Dekker made a really good point: an email or online petition is easy to ignore, especially since all you have to do is press the delete key on the keyboard to get rid of it. Actual physical letters, on the other hand, are not that easy to ignore or get rid of, especially if they start to pile up. Studios will look at a letter and see that if these people took the time and effort to write this letter and pay for the envelope and stamp just to request a film to be released on DVD, then they must be willing to spend their money on said DVD. It makes sense, doesn't it? In fact, you're probably thinking now about all those times you wrote those emails or signed an online petition to rescue something, only to realize that it probably didn't make a difference. Did you try to save a TV show from cancellation by signing an online petition? What if you and everyone else wrote a letter instead? That show might still be on the air. Makes you think...

So, with all that being said:

If you want a MONSTER SQUAD DVD write to:

Mr. Sumner M. Redstone
Viacom
1515 Broadway
New York, NY 10036

If you want a NIGHT OF THE CREEPS DVD write to:

Mr. Michael Lynton
Mr. Bob Osher
Sony Pictures Entertainment
10202 West Washingtopn Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232

So get off your lazy fanboy ass and start writing, won't ya?! And make sure you're nice about it! The last thing us fanboys need is some asshole being a jerk to the studio. If know someone is doing that, make sure to kick him in the nards!
